They were members of the doomed Treaty Party, which believed the Cherokee would get a better deal if they compromised with the United States government. The Ridge Treaty was never to be, and the members were forced to sign the treaty of New Echota, a travesty in which the Cherokee people were forced to trade their prosperous farms and lands in Georgia for desolate land in Indian Territory |
